Brad R. Balter, CFA, Managing Partner
Brad has over 18 years experience in the financial services and hedge fund industry. At BCM, Brad is responsible for managing the firm’s fund of fund products and customized portfolios. He is lead portfolio manager of the BCM Discovery Fund and Co-Manager of the BCM Credit Opportunities Fund. Prior to forming Balter Capital Management in 2006, Brad was a Managing Director, Institutional Investor Group at Citigroup Global Markets where he held primary responsibility for multi-strategy hedge fund relationships from 2002-2005. From 1992 until 2001 Brad was with PaineWebber Inc. (and subsequently UBS) where he was a leading member of the firms middle markets hedge fund coverage program, where he was responsible for early stage hedge fund relationships. He is a graduate of Williams College and a Chartered Financial Analyst.
Victor W. Chiang, Partner and COO/CCO
Victor is a founding member of Balter Capital Management and is responsible for all operational due diligence as well as operating and compliance functions of the firm. Prior to BCM, Victor spent over 12 years at Accenture, most recently as a senior manager with the Financial Services Industry division. He was responsible for technology implementation with some of the country’s largest financial services companies, including Fidelity Investments, American Express, Barclays Capital and the Royal Bank of Canada. Victor graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a B.S. in Computer Engineering.
Jay C. Warner, CFA, Partner and Chief Investment Officer
Jay is a founding member of Balter Capital Management and has worked within the financial industry for over 13 years. Prior to the formation of BCM, Jay was a Financial Analyst for Citigroup Global Markets, with responsibility for idea generation and facilitation of access to research related resources for hedge fund clients of the bank. From 2000 to 2004 Jay was an Investment Analyst and member of the Investment Committee at The Segalas Group, a New Canaan, CT based hedge fund. Prior to his work at The Segalas Group, Jay was a Private Placement Analyst at Citigroup’s Traveler Insurance Unit, where he focused on a broad number of sectors as it pertained to credit investments for Traveler’s portfolios. He graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a B.A. in Finance and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
Celicia C. Zhao, Senior Hedge Fund Analyst
Celicia has over 8 years experience in the hedge fund industry. Prior to BCM, Celicia was responsible for hedge fund analysis at SCS Financial LLC, a Boston-based private wealth management firm and multi-family office. Celicia was dedicated to hedge fund research at SCS across all strategies and geographies. From 2004 – 2008, Celicia worked at Capital Management Advisors, a Geneva, Switzerland based hedge fund advisory and fund of hedge funds where she held primary responsibility for research of equity long/short, merger arbitrage and event driven hedge fund strategies. She is a graduate of Brandeis University, with a B.A. in Economics and has a degree from the Brandeis International Business School, with a M.A. in International Economics and Finance. Celicia is fluent in Chinese and Spanish.
David Achterhof, CFA, Senior Analyst
David joined BCM in 2011 as a Senior Analyst. Prior to BCM, David was an Associate Director of Research and Analytics at Tuckerbrook, where he played an integral role in manager selection and due diligence of hedge fund and private equity investments for the firm’s fund of fund business. Prior to Tuckerbrook, David was an Associate Director at Thomson Financial in the Capital Markets Intelligence Group, where he provided qualitative and quantitative analysis to Fortune 500 companies to help them develop their corporate communication strategies to investors. Prior to his employment at Thomson Financial, David worked as a Senior Examiner in the Corporate Banking Division at the Bank of New York, where he conducted reviews of the Bank's internal controls and risk management procedures, including examinations of Value at Risk (VAR), position limits, and Asset Liability Management. David holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from Trinity College (CT) and is a Chartered Financial Analyst.
Caroline P. O’Donnell, Senior Operations Analyst
Carrie joined BCM in 2010. Prior to joining BCM, Carrie was an analyst at Northern Trust in Chicago where she was responsible for Fund Accounting for Corporate Action processing across Northern Trust’s fund products. Her role at Northern Trust required daily interaction with portfolio managers and the research departments within the bank and was viewed as an integral member of the operations team. Prior to Northern Trust, Carrie worked as a research assistant for the U.S. Dairy Export Council in Washington D.C. In this role she was responsible for assisting in trade missions, promoting council membership, preparing research and studies related to Council initiatives as well as the tracking and recording of all Dairy export data. She received her B.A. in International Business from the College of Charleston in South Carolina.
Benjamin R. Deschaine, CAIA, Senior Hedge Fund Analyst
Ben has nearly 15 year of investment industry experience primarily focused in the hedge fund space. Ben has experience working for hedge fund allocators and directly within a hedge fund, which provides him a unique perspective of seeing hedge funds from both sides of the business. Prior to joining BCM, Ben was a Managing Director at Sabretooth Capital Management, LLC, a global multi-strategy hedge fund affiliated with Tiger Management, where he was responsible for communicating the firm’s investment strategy encompassing multiple asset classes, derivative instruments and geographies. He was also in charge of external investor due diligence and business development. Prior to Ben’s time at Sabretooth he spent 10 years at Federal Street Advisors, a Boston based wealth management firm, leading their alternative investment research. At Federal Street, Ben was responsible for monitoring all hedge fund, private equity and venture capital investments. Ben was also the portfolio manager for Federal Street’s Saltbox Partners, LP, an internal long/short equity hedge fund of funds. While at Federal Street Ben published several investment related white papers and has been a speaker at numerous industry events. Prior to Federal Street Ben was an Analyst at Principal Financial Group and NQP Administration Services where he helped design non-traditional investment programs for wealthy individuals and business executives. He is a graduate of Bentley University with a B.S. and M.S. in Finance. Ben has earned the CAIA designation.
